A Beginners' Guide to Uninterruptible Power Supplies

When buying an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system, sometimes it can be difficult to know which system be the right one for you. Some UPS systems are more suitable for smaller applications such as home offices, whilst others can provide enough power for entire data centres.

Here at Cetronic, we supply a wide variety of UPS systems able to provide power from 400VA to 6,400KVA, so we know how problematic it can be to decide.

Here is a brief guide to understanding the different types/technologies of UPS:

Line Interactive UPS

Line interactive UPS, also known as ‘standby’ or ‘offline’ UPS, are often the least expensive option when purchasing a UPS. In these systems, the load is powered directly by the input power and the backup power circuitry is only initiated when the input power fails. Most UPS below 1 kVA are line interactive or standby UPS and are best suited for personal computers.

Due to their size, line interactive UPS tend to be single phase input and single phase output. The likes of the Premier iDialog, which can provide power between 400VA and 1600VA, are small UPS ideal for protecting a PC in a home office. At the other end of the spectrum one can buy the Premier Vision Dual UPS which can provide power up to 3000VA and is standalone or mountable on a 19” rack.

Online UPS

Online UPS are far more common among medium-to-large sized operations and are versatile in their scope. These can varying from single-phase input and output to three-phase UPS and data centre UPS systems that can provide power up to 800KVA in a single unit.

Single Phase Input/Output - 700VA – 20kVA

The smallest power models using online technology, these UPS systems provide critical power protection for a wide range of applications such as computers, small/mid-size server rooms, IT networks, control systems, telephone systems, CCTV/security and medical equipment.

Examples of this type include: The Premium SE Pro, an online double-conversion UPS, which is exceptionally reliable at providing power protection for important loads up to 3000VA.

Three Phase Input/Single Phase Output - 6.5kVA – 100kVA

These heavier load UPS are ideal for protecting larger applications such as communications rooms and switch rooms. Examples of this three phase input type include the Master Plus UPS, which can supply loads up to 100kVA.

Three Phase Input/Three Phase Output - 10kVA – 800kVA

These durable online UPS are suitable for the most safety-critical applications like data centres and industrial manufacturing plants. The Master Plus HIP is the most powerful UPS we have, handling up to 600kVA and boasting an IGBT-based rectifier, which allows a totally uninterrupted power supply.
